GREATER MONCTON, N.B. – The Greater Moncton International Airport Authority Inc. (GMIAA) is proud to announce that they have been successful at achieving the Level 2 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program, a worldwide program led by Airports Council International.

“This accreditation demonstrates our ongoing commitment to managing and reducing our impact on the environment, by monitoring and reviewing our operations to identify potential improvements. We are 1 of only 3 airports in Canada and 15 in North America to have reached Level 2 accreditation. Our next challenge is Level 3 – Optimization. This will include Scope 3 emissions, which are not under our control, but directly impact the airport, like emissions from ground handling equipment and landing and take-off emissions. We will therefore be reaching out to our airline and ground handling partners to look at potential improvements. Only 3 airports in Canada and 9 in North America have Level 3 completed.”, says YQM President and CEO Bernard LeBlanc.

These are the steps that were done in order to achieve this accreditation:

  • Prepare our carbon footprint;
  • Have a Carbon Policy in place;
  • Have a Carbon Reduction Target in place;
  • Prepare a Carbon Management Plan, which details how we manage carbon emissions at the airport and also lists Carbon Reduction Initiatives which we will undertake;
  • Demonstrate an actual reduction of carbon emissions.

The target is to reduce carbon emissions by 5% by 2020, from the baseline year of 2015. Up to now, there has been a reduction in 2017 of 284 tCO2e (tonnes CO2 equivalent), which is a reduction of just under 11%. With energy efficiency initiatives planned for 2018, we continue to work on further reducing our carbon footprint.
